If She Were Carefree

Acrylic and modeling paste on canvas, 2026
36 × 36 in (diptych, two panels)

The Sigiriya frescoes again, in two panels. The women there are shown half-length, rising out of cloud, always holding something, always in one fixed position, and I kept thinking they cannot have stood like that all the time. There must have been moments of ease. So I painted a moment off duty, alone on a terrace above the gardens, unbothered, her shawl moving softly in the wind, which is how I showed that her mind was quiet. I gave her curly hair because I wanted her to be me. The wall behind her is painted in the old manner, so the age of the place is in the surface as well as in her.
